My Running Story

I've been running since 1990. I began running cross-country and track during my sophomore year in high school. My original intention was to do the long jump in track, but I suppose my coach auotmatically assumed that this skinny, white boy didn't have much potential in jumping. On my very first day of practice, coach told the team to do run three miles; well, I hadn't ever run around the block without feeling like my lungs were about to explode, so three miles seemed impossible. I did finish the workout, but not without walking a significant amount of the course. Despite the pain, I was hooked from the start. I ended up running 20:48 for 5k my first season, and I finally was able to beat the girls on the team by the end of then year! Well, by the time I finished high school, I had finished 6th in the SC state meet for cross-country, and 3rd in the 800 meters in AA Track.

The following year I went on to run cross-country at College of Charleston. I fit in as 4th man on the team my freshman year and ran 28:40 for 8k. By my junior year, I alternated as 1st and 2nd man on the year, running 21:40 for 4 miles and 27:39 for 8k. My sophomore and senior years were plagued with some sort of breathing disorder that restricted me from running anywhere near my potential.

During grad school I ran periodically but could never get back to the level of college running. I tried the marathon a couple of times and did really poorly while suffering from legs cramps and hitting the wall. After moving to Colorado I stopped running because of the cold and snow and put on a lot of weight. The following summer I was sorely out of shape and felt horrible. So, since 2001 I've been more highly motivated, have improved my diet, and have been running faster each year since then. I've even branched out into mountain trail running and seem to be pretty good at that as long as I stay below 12,500 feet. I hope I can keep up the running for years to come.
